Repair Or ReplaceJames 1:5

The Repair Costs Nearly As Much

This message is for the man stuck between two bad options, who wants to decide without being able to prove afterward that he was right

Five days.

That is how long this has been going on, and it is worth naming the number because the number is part of the problem now.

The repair is one figure. The replacement is another figure. And the two figures are close enough together that neither one wins, which is precisely why there has been no decision.

If the repair had been a quarter of the other one, this article would not exist. You would have called somebody on Monday. It is the closeness that has done this, because the closeness means there is no obvious answer, and with no obvious answer the thing has quietly turned into something else.

It has turned into a test.

Not of the machine. Of the man deciding. Somewhere in the last five days this stopped being a household decision and became a question about judgment, and specifically about whether yours is any good.

And that is what has been costing the sleep, because a household decision can be settled in ten minutes and a verdict on a man cannot be decided at all.

You are a man choosing between two reasonable options and not a man about to make a mistake, and a decision made with what you actually know has never once been a failure waiting to be discovered.

The Repair Costs Nearly As Much

He giveth liberally and upbraideth not

There is a verse about asking God for wisdom, and the second half of it is doing more work than the first.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. (James 1:5, King James Version)

Start with the first three words, because they are already unusual. If any of you lack wisdom. The lacking is assumed. He does not say if any of you have failed to acquire wisdom, and there is no suggestion that the lack is a fault to be explained.

You are permitted to lack the answer without that being a defect in you, and a man who does not know which way to go has never once been described by Scripture as a man who should have known. The Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody who has had two figures on an envelope since Monday, and James 1:5 opens by assuming the lack rather than questioning it.

Then liberally. Generously, freely, without measuring it out. Not in proportion to how well the asking was done, not weighed against how many other times the same person has asked about something similar.

You are asking somebody who gives without portioning it, and a request for wisdom has never once been rationed according to how many previous ones there were. The written word says liberally and does not attach a single condition to it, and the Spirit of God is the one who gives what a man lacks at a kitchen table on a Friday.

And then the part that is the actual medicine here: and upbraideth not.

Upbraid is to scold. To reproach. To give a person the thing and also the lecture about needing it.

God does not do that. He hands over the wisdom without the commentary, without the sigh, without the reminder that a sensible man would have sorted this out on Tuesday.

You are dealing with somebody who does not attach a lecture to the help, and an answer given by God has never once arrived with a remark about how long it took to ask. The Holy Spirit is the one who supplies without a single reproach, and James 1:5 says upbraideth not in plain words.

And here is why that half matters more than anything else on this page.

Because for five days there has been an upbraiding going on, and God has not been doing it.

You have been scolded all week by one man only, and the voice that has been running in this kitchen since Monday has never once been the voice of the one who gives. The Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man which voice he has been listening to, and James 1:5 says upbraideth not and puts no lecture anywhere near the giving.

The standard nobody could meet

Something practical, and it is about a standard that got set without ever being examined.

The standard is this: the right answer is the one that turns out well, and a good decision is a decision that is proved correct later.

That standard is impossible. Not difficult. Impossible, in the strict sense, because the information that would settle it does not exist yet and will not exist for two years.

If the repair is chosen and the machine runs for four more years, that looks like the right call. If it fails in seven months, the same decision, made with the same information, by the same man, looks foolish. The decision did not change. Only the weather did.

You have been trying to make a decision that cannot be proved wrong later, and a choice made before the outcome is known has never once been the kind of thing that could be graded. The written word offers wisdom for the deciding rather than certainty about the result, and the Spirit of God is the one who gives the first without ever promising the second.

So the question to ask is not which one is right. That question has no answer available, which is why five days of asking it has produced nothing.

The question is: do I have enough to choose.

And the answer is yes, and here is the inventory.

There are two figures. There is a rough sense of how old the machine is. There is a rough sense of what the household can carry this month. There is an instinct that has been there since Monday and has been overruled about nine times.

You have everything this decision actually requires already in your hands, and a man with two figures and an instinct has never once been a man without enough to go on. The Holy Spirit is the one who settles a thing that has been circling since Monday, and James 1:5 says the wisdom is given rather than earned.

And whichever one is chosen, this household adjusts. That is not a promise about the machine. That is an observation about households, which absorb both outcomes inside a week and stop discussing either one inside a month.

You are living in a household that has absorbed harder things than this quietly, and a family that adjusts to whatever is decided has never once been a family waiting to find out whether you got it right. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a house on both sides of a decision, and James 1:5 gives wisdom for the choosing and says nothing at all about the outcome.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man with an envelope on a Friday night.

You are a man choosing between two reasonable options and not a man about to make a mistake, and a decision made with what you actually know has never once been a failure waiting to be discovered. I am not telling you which one to pick and I am not telling you how it turns out. James 1:5 says He gives liberally and upbraideth not, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who supplies what is lacking at that table.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You have not been scolded once in five days by the one who is actually handing out the wisdom, and a God who upbraideth not has never once stood behind a man adding up how long he took. The Spirit of God is the one who gives without the lecture, and the written word assumed the lack in its opening words, so the lacking was never the thing under review.

One sheet. Two options. Pick. Throw the sheet away.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Five days of turning this over, you were never once required and you have produced nothing. James 1:5 says God giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, so by the Holy Spirit I write the two down and I pick one tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Standard I could never meet, you have no business here and nothing in this house can be proved. The written word offers wisdom for the deciding rather than certainty about the result, and by the Holy Spirit I put the sheet in the trash.
  3. Father, You give liberally and You never once attach the lecture to the help. Your word says upbraideth not, so by Your Spirit I stop scolding a man You are not scolding, and I make the call on Monday.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
