Repair Or ReplaceLuke 14:28

Six Months Or Three Years

This message is for the man offered two repairs, one that buys half a year and one that costs triple, who needs the smaller one not to be a failure

Two prices and two numbers of months, and the man was honest about both.

He said: I can do the smaller job and you will get some months out of it, or I can do the larger one and it should run for years, and the larger one is about triple.

And then he said the thing that has been going around in your head since, which was: it is up to you.

That is the correct answer from him. He is not supposed to decide how a household spends what it has. But it left you standing in a kitchen with a decision that has quietly turned into a description of yourself.

Because the two options do not feel like two options. They feel like the proper job and the makeshift one. They feel like what a man does if he can, and what a man does if he cannot.

And so the smaller job, which is a perfectly sensible piece of work on a machine, has acquired a second meaning, and the second meaning is the whole difficulty.

You are a man sizing a decision to his household and not a man taking the lesser option, and choosing what fits has never once been the same as settling for something.

Six Months Or Three Years

Sitteth down first, and counteth the cost

There is a line about building a tower, and it is nearly always quoted as a warning, and there is something in it that the warning version skips.

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? (Luke 14:28, King James Version)

Sitteth down first, and counteth the cost. That is the instruction and it is approving. The man who sits down and counts is the sensible one in the illustration. He is the example, not the warning.

You are doing the exact thing the verse commends, and a man sitting at a table counting what he has has never once been a man doing something small. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man doing arithmetic in his own kitchen, and Luke 14:28 praises the sitting down and the counting as the wise move.

Now look closely at the standard the verse sets, because it is not the one people assume.

Whether he have sufficient to finish it. Sufficient. Enough for what is being attempted. The measure is not whether he has a great deal. The measure is whether what he has matches what he is starting.

That is a relative standard, not an absolute one. A small tower and a small amount are a perfect match. A large tower and a small amount are the failure the verse warns about, and the failure is in the mismatch and never in the size.

You are being measured against what fits rather than against what is impressive, and a job sized to what a household actually has has never once been the failure this verse describes. The written word makes sufficiency the whole test, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a man from importing a standard the passage never set.

And notice what the verse does not say, because this is the sentence that dissolves the second meaning.

It does not say build the biggest tower you can. It does not say borrow in order to build a better one. It does not hint that a small completed tower is a lesser thing than a large one.

It says count, and match, and finish.

You have a standard that ends at finishing and not at impressing, and a completed small thing has never once ranked below an unfinished large one anywhere in Scripture. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a comparison out of a man's kitchen, and Luke 14:28 measures by sufficiency to finish.

The second meaning is not in the job

Something practical, and it is about separating two things that have got welded together.

There is a repair that buys six months. That is a technical fact about a machine and a piece of work, and it is neither good nor bad on its own. It is a size.

And then there is the second meaning: that choosing it says something about what a man can afford, and therefore about the man.

Those are welded together right now, and they are not actually attached. The weld is recent and it was made in your own kitchen this week.

You are holding a piece of work and a verdict as though they were one object, and a repair with a shorter life in it has never once been a statement about the man who bought it. The written word talks about counting and sufficiency without ever grading the builder, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates a fact from a meaning at a kitchen table.

Now the second practical thing, and it is a genuinely useful way to look at it.

Six months is six months of a working household. It is real time, and during it everything gets washed, and nobody stands in a laundromat, and the house runs.

And in six months the situation will be a different situation. Not necessarily better. Different. Which means the decision being made now does not have to carry a decision that belongs to a month that has not arrived.

You are deciding for the household you have this week, and a choice that covers six months has never once been required to solve the twelfth one as well. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a decision the size of the thing being decided, and Luke 14:28 asks what a man has for the thing in front of him.

Then write it on the calendar, because a decision on a calendar is a plan and a decision in a head is a worry.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man with two figures on a scrap of paper tonight.

You are a man sizing a decision to his household and not a man taking the lesser option, and choosing what fits has never once been the same as settling for something. I am not telling you which job and I am not telling you how long it runs. Luke 14:28 makes sufficiency the whole measure, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who keeps the standard where the verse put it.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You have a finished thing available to you this week, and a small tower that gets built has never once been ranked below a large one that stays a drawing. The Spirit of God is the one who separates the work from the verdict, and the written word commended the man who sat down and counted, which is exactly what has been happening in your kitchen.

Choose the size that fits. Then put it on the calendar.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Second meaning I welded onto a repair, you were never once part of the job in front of me. Luke 14:28 asks whether a man has sufficient to finish, so by the Holy Spirit I write the smaller job on the calendar in pen tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Comparison between a proper job and mine, you have no standing in this kitchen and no verse behind you. The written word ends its test at finishing and never once at impressing, and by the Holy Spirit I size this to the household I actually have.
  3. Father, You commended the man who sat down and counted, and You never once told him to build a bigger tower. Your word says whether he have sufficient to finish it, so by Your Spirit I choose what fits and I write it down tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
