It Died TodayProverbs 15:1

My Daughter Heard Me Swear At It

This message is for the mother who kicked the machine and looked up to find a child in the doorway, and is carrying the look on that child's face

You kicked it.

Not hard. Once, with the side of your foot, the way a person does when the thing has just done the same nothing for the fourth time and there is a basket on the floor behind you and a clock on the wall that is not slowing down for anybody.

And you said something. Out loud. In the voice that is not your normal voice.

And then you looked up.

And she was in the doorway. In the pajamas with the stars. Not crying. Not frightened, exactly. Just watching, in that flat way children have when they are taking something in and filing it somewhere, and you do not get to see which drawer it goes in.

And that look has been with you ever since, and it has been growing, and by now it has taken on a size that has very little to do with what actually happened in that kitchen.

So let us start there, because that is the thing that needs handling first, before anything at all about the machine.

You are a mother who lost her temper at an appliance and not a mother who frightened her child, and one bad minute in a kitchen has never once undone the years around it.

My Daughter Heard Me Swear At It

A soft answer

There is a proverb everybody knows half of, and the half everybody knows is usually aimed at the wrong person.

A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. (Proverbs 15:1, King James Version)

It is usually quoted at somebody who is being shouted at, as advice about how to handle a difficult person. And it does mean that. But read it plainly and notice what it actually describes, which is a mechanism rather than a rule.

A soft answer turns wrath away. It does something. It changes the temperature of a room by being spoken into it. That is a real effect and the proverb states it as a fact about how rooms work.

You have a soft answer available to you tonight and it still does what the proverb says it does, and a room that went hot at half past seven has never once been past the reach of one quiet sentence. Proverbs 15:1 describes the turning away of wrath as something an answer performs rather than something a person earns, and the Holy Spirit is the one who goes into a child's bedroom with a mother at nine o'clock.

Now here is the part that matters for this particular evening.

The proverb does not say a soft answer prevents wrath. It says it turns it away. Turning something away happens after it has arrived. The soft answer in that verse is not the answer of a person who never got angry. It is what comes next.

You are standing exactly where that proverb operates, and a soft answer spoken after the fact has never once been disqualified by the shouting that came before it. The written word puts the softness after the wrath in the same sentence, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a late sentence land as though it were early.

And grievous words stir up anger. That is the other half, and I want to be honest about it rather than skip it.

Something did happen in that kitchen. A voice was raised. A foot connected with a machine. The room changed. That is real and I am not going to tell you it was nothing, because you were there and you know it was not nothing.

You are not being asked to pretend the minute did not happen, and a proverb that names grievous words out loud has never once required a mother to deny her own kitchen. The Holy Spirit is the one who lets a thing be true without letting it be final, and the written word puts both halves of it in one verse so neither one has to be hidden.

What she actually saw

Here is the practical half, and it is about the gap between the event and the story.

What she saw was her mother, who is a whole person with a whole history, angry at a washing machine for about forty seconds on a Tuesday evening.

What has been carried since is a scene in which a child watched her mother come apart, and filed it, and will carry it, and it will come up in some room in twenty years with somebody who is paid to listen.

Those two are not the same size. One of them is a Tuesday. The other one is a film you have been running.

You have been watching a version of that minute that is bigger than the minute was, and forty seconds in a kitchen has never once been a documentary about a mother. Proverbs 15:1 is interested in what happens next in a room rather than in cataloguing what went wrong in it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present with a woman replaying a doorway at eleven at night.

And here is the second practical thing, and it is the one that actually does the work.

Children read repair more than they read rupture. They are good at it. They watch what happens after a thing goes wrong, and that is the part they learn from, because that is the part that tells them what kind of house this is.

A house where a person can be angry and then come back and say so plainly is a house where a child learns that anger is survivable and repairable. That is not a consolation prize. That is one of the most useful things a person can be taught, and it cannot be taught in a house where nothing ever goes wrong.

You are able to teach her something tonight that a perfect evening could never have taught her, and a repair made out loud has never once been worth less than an evening that needed no repairing. The written word says a soft answer turns wrath away, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present in a doorway at bedtime while it gets said.

So go and find her. Tonight if she is awake, in the morning if she is not.

One sentence. Not an explanation of how hard the week has been, not the machine, not the money, none of the reasons. She does not need the reasons and the reasons will sound like the fault is being moved somewhere else.

Say: I got angry at the machine and I was loud, and that was not about you. That is the whole thing.

You are speaking one sentence to a child tonight and not making a case, and a short plain apology has never once needed the reasons attached to it to do its work. Proverbs 15:1 says the softness is what turns the room, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a plain sentence further than an explanation would go.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a mother sitting up at eleven at night replaying a doorway.

You are a mother who lost her temper at an appliance and not a mother who frightened her child, and one bad minute in a kitchen has never once undone the years around it. I am not telling you the minute did not happen and I am not telling you it was fine. Proverbs 15:1 puts the softness after the wrath in the same sentence, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who carries a late answer into a bedroom.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You have a repair available tonight that is bigger than the rupture was, and a house where somebody comes back and says it plainly has never once been a house a child learned fear in. The Spirit of God is the one who turns a room with one quiet sentence, and the written word says the soft answer does the turning rather than the person deserving it.

Go and find her. One sentence. Then read the book.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Minute in the kitchen, you were never once a verdict on the mother in this house. Proverbs 15:1 says a soft answer turneth away wrath and puts it after the anger, so by the Holy Spirit I go in and I say one sentence tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Film of the doorway I keep running, you have no standing and no accuracy in you. The written word cares what happens next in a room rather than cataloguing what went wrong in it, and by the Holy Spirit I stop the projector and go upstairs.
  3. Father, You put the softness after the wrath in one verse so neither half would have to be hidden. Your word says a soft answer turneth away wrath, so by Your Spirit I make the repair out loud tonight and then I read her the book.
