It was the last one.
That is the part nobody outside the house would understand, and it is the reason this one landed differently from the others.
The oven went first, in the spring, and that was absorbed. Then the thing in the bathroom, which is still not right and has a note on it. Then the car, which is a separate category of trouble but sits in the same weather system. And through all of it there was one machine in that kitchen that simply worked, every time, without being thought about.
And on Sunday it did not.
And what came up in you was not really about the machine. It was a sentence that had been forming for some months and finally found the words, and the sentence was something like: there is nothing left in this house that I can count on.
That is not a thought about appliances. That is a man taking an inventory of his own life and finding it short.
So we are going to work on that, and not on the machine, because the machine is a small problem sitting in front of a large feeling and the large feeling is what is keeping you awake.
You are a man who has run out of room and not a man who has run out of capability, and a house with a long list in it has never once been a report on the person keeping it.

Lead me to the rock that is higher than I
There is a line in the psalms that is the exact prayer of a person who has run out of room, and it is very short.
From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. (Psalm 61:2, King James Version)
When my heart is overwhelmed. He names the condition without apologizing for it. He does not say if I were stronger, and he does not work out how he got there. He says: this is the state I am in, and from here I am calling.
You are permitted to name the state you are in without accounting for it first, and an overwhelmed heart has never once been asked by Scripture to explain itself before it could speak. Psalm 61:2 opens with the overwhelming as a plain fact, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present with a man standing in a kitchen taking stock.
Then look at what he actually asks for, because it is not what most people would ask for.
He does not ask for the trouble to be removed. He does not ask for strength to cope with it. He asks to be led somewhere. To a rock. A rock that is higher than he is.
That is a request about position rather than about capacity. He is not asking to be made taller. He is asking to be taken somewhere the height is not his problem.
You are allowed to ask for higher ground instead of more strength, and a man at the end of his own resources has never once been required to find more of them before he can be helped. The written word has him asking to be led rather than to be improved, and the Spirit of God is the one who does the leading in a house where the list has got long.
And higher than I is the part that undoes the whole trap.
The rock is not a version of him with better habits. It is not the same man managing better. It is something outside him and above him, and the whole point of it is that it is not made out of his own reserves, because his own reserves are what ran out.
You are not being asked to generate what you have already spent, and a rock that is higher than you have never once been something you had to build out of yourself. Psalm 61:2 puts the height outside the man on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes somebody to ground they did not make.
The counting is the injury
Something practical here, and it is about a habit that has crept in without being chosen.
At some point in the last few months, this house started being counted. Not deliberately. But the list exists now, and it gets run through, and every new item on it does not get added so much as it gets multiplied by everything already there.
That is why Sunday landed the way it did. One machine failing is a small event. One machine failing at the end of a list is the list speaking, and the list says something much larger and much crueler.
You have been reading a list instead of an event, and a run of ordinary failures has never once combined into a statement about the man who lives here. The written word describes an overwhelmed heart without ever suggesting that the overwhelming was deserved, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present with a man in a kitchen who has lost count.
So here is the counter move, and it is small enough to do tonight and strange enough that it works.
Count the other direction, once, out loud.
Stand in that kitchen and name one thing that still works. Not all of them. One. The faucet runs. The lights come on. The kettle boils. The window opens. The door locks. Pick one and say it out loud in the room.
You are able to say one true thing out loud in that kitchen tonight, and a house with one working thing named in it has never once been the empty house the list described. Psalm 61:2 has a man speaking from the end of the earth rather than staying silent there, and the Holy Spirit is the one in the room when a sentence gets said out loud.
It will feel ridiculous. Do it anyway. The reason it works is not positive thinking, which does nothing for a man who genuinely has four broken things. The reason it works is that saying something out loud in a room breaks the private loop, and the private loop is where the list lives.
And then there is the practical matter of the machine, and it is genuinely smaller than it looks tonight. One call. One decision. It goes in the week somewhere and it is not tonight's job.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man standing in a kitchen counting what is broken.
You are a man who has run out of room and not a man who has run out of capability, and a house with a long list in it has never once been a report on the person keeping it. I am not telling you the list gets shorter and I am not telling you what any of it costs. Psalm 61:2 asks to be led to higher ground rather than to be given more strength, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who does the leading.
And this, which is the word I actually came with:
You have a rock available that is higher than you are, and ground that somebody else made has never once required you to have built it out of what you had left. The Spirit of God is the one who leads a man there rather than asking him to climb, and the written word put the height outside the man deliberately, because the man was already out.
One thing named out loud. Then bed.
Declare this over yourself
- List running in this house, you were never once a verdict on the man who lives in it. Psalm 61:2 says lead me to the rock that is higher than I, so by the Holy Spirit I name one working thing out loud tonight, in the name of Jesus.
- Feeling that nothing here can be counted on, you have no authority to speak for this whole house. The written word has a man asking to be led rather than improved, and by the Holy Spirit I stop counting the wrong direction.
- Father, You put the rock outside the man and higher than he was, and You never once asked him to build it. Your word says lead me to the rock that is higher than I, so by Your Spirit I stand in my kitchen tonight and I say one true thing out loud.
