It Died The Week We Brought Her Home

Four days old.

That is the number that makes this one different, and everybody who has not been in that week thinks the difference is about laundry.

It is not about laundry. There is a bag of things for the hospital still by the door and a car seat in the hall and a house that has not been quiet since Thursday, and into all of that a machine stops, and something in a man goes very still.

Because the timing is doing something. And I want to say out loud what it is doing, because most men will not say it and will carry it for a month instead.

The timing feels like a comment.

Not a loud one. Nothing anybody would repeat. Just a small cold thought that arrives while standing in a utility room at midnight with a bottle warming in the kitchen, and the thought is roughly: so it is going to be like this.

Or worse, and quieter: I cannot even keep a house running for her first week.

So that is what this article is about, and the machine is barely in it.

You are a father in the hardest week of a good year and not a father being told something, and the timing of a broken machine has never once been a sentence spoken over a household.

When thou passest through the waters

There is a verse people put on cards, and the card version leaves out the grammar, and the grammar is the whole thing.

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned. (Isaiah 43:2, King James Version)

When. Not if. The verse assumes the waters. It takes for granted that there will be a passing through, and it spends none of its words on preventing that.

And through. Through is a preposition about direction and it means there is another side. Not around, not instead of. Through.

You are passing through something rather than settling into it, and a week with water in it has never once been described by Scripture as a place a household stops. The Holy Spirit is the one standing in a utility room at midnight with a man and a bottle warming, and Isaiah 43:2 says when and through rather than if and around.

Now the middle clause, which is the one that speaks to the cold thought.

I will be with thee. That is the promise in the verse, and it is worth noticing what it is not. It is not I will keep the water off you. It is not nothing difficult will coincide with anything precious. It is a promise about company, and company is a different kind of help than prevention.

You are accompanied through this week rather than exempted from it, and a promise about company has never once been a smaller promise than a promise about weather. The written word puts the being with in the middle of the waters rather than on the far side, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present in a house at four days old and midnight.

And here is what that does to the timing.

If the verse expects the waters, then the arrival of the waters is not information. It is not a message, it is not a comment, and it is not a review of the man keeping the house. It is the thing the verse already said would be there, and God is described as present in it rather than as the author of it.

You were never handed a message by a week, and a coincidence of hard things has never once been a verdict issued over the man carrying them. The Holy Spirit is the one who refuses to let a household read its own week for a meaning, and Isaiah 43:2 promises company inside the waters without once explaining why the waters came.

What that week actually is

Something practical, because the practical version is a relief here.

The first week with a newborn in the house is, physically, one of the most demanding stretches a household ever goes through. Sleep is broken into pieces. Nobody has eaten a proper meal. Everything takes four times as long as it should, and the person who normally holds the household together is recovering from something serious.

In that state, everything that happens is experienced at about three times its actual weight. That is not weakness and it is not a spiritual condition. It is a body running on four hours of interrupted sleep across four nights, and it happens to everybody.

You are feeling a normal event at an abnormal size because of what week it is, and a tired man in a hard week has never once been an unreliable man. The written word describes people passing through water without once grading how well they managed it, and the Spirit of God is the one present with a household that is running on very little.

So here is the thing to do with the timing, and it is almost mechanical.

Say it out loud once, to nobody, in the room: this is bad timing and it is not a message.

That is it. Once, plainly, in the room where the thought arrived. It is not a technique and it is not a spell. It is the same principle as saying any true thing out loud, which is that a sentence in the air stops circling, and a sentence that stops circling stops growing.

You have a true sentence available tonight and saying it out loud is the whole of the work, and a thought named in a room has never once kept the power it had while it was private. The Holy Spirit is the one in a utility room when it gets said, and Isaiah 43:2 has God speaking into the middle of the waters rather than after them.

Then the machine. One call this week. Hand washing for a few days will not harm anybody, and there is a laundromat, and somebody will offer if the week is mentioned to one person. None of that is tonight.
