Repair Or ReplaceAmos 3:3

He Wants To Fix It And I Do Not

This message is for the wife in a household split two ways over the same machine, who wants a decision that does not cost her the marriage's peace

You have had the same conversation six times.

Not an argument. That is the strange part and it is why it has been so hard to get hold of. Nobody has raised their voice. Both of you have been reasonable every single time, which is exactly why it keeps restarting, because nothing ever gets settled by two reasonable people being reasonable at each other.

He wants to fix it. He has looked things up. He has a sense of what the trouble is and he thinks it is within reach, and there is an energy in him about it that is difficult to be the one standing in front of.

And you do not want it fixed. Not because of the money, particularly. Because you have watched something in this house be temporarily fixed before, and you remember the six weeks of it working intermittently, and you are the one who was here for the six weeks.

So the sixth conversation ended the way the other five did, which is with nothing decided and both of you slightly further apart than when it started.

And here is the thing worth seeing before anything else.

The two of you are not disagreeing about a machine.

You are two people who want the same thing by different routes and not two people at odds, and a disagreement about a machine has never once been a crack in a marriage.

He Wants To Fix It And I Do Not

Can two walk together, except they be agreed

There is a question in Amos that gets used as a rule about compatibility, and it is really a question about direction.

Can two walk together, except they be agreed? (Amos 3:3, King James Version)

Walk together. That is the image and it is worth holding onto, because walking together is not the same as thinking the same thing.

Two people walking together have agreed about the road and the pace. They have not agreed about everything. They can walk an entire afternoon disagreeing loudly about something and still be walking together, because the agreement that matters is the one about where they are both going.

You are walking the same road as him whether or not you agree about the route, and two people disagreeing about a method have never once been two people going in different directions. The Holy Spirit is the one present in a kitchen where the same conversation has happened six times, and Amos 3:3 asks about walking together rather than about thinking alike.

Now apply that to the six conversations.

What does he want? A house that works, at a cost the household can carry, without letting anybody down.

What do you want? A house that works, at a cost the household can carry, without another six weeks of something half functioning.

That is the same destination. The disagreement is entirely about the road, and the road has been standing in for the destination for six conversations, which is why every one of them has felt bigger than it was.

You are already agreed on everything that Amos is asking about, and a difference of opinion about a repair has never once meant a household lost its shared direction. The written word makes the agreement about the walking rather than about the opinions, and the Spirit of God is the one who shows two people that they are facing the same way.

And there is something else in that question that is easy to miss.

It is a question. Not a rule. Amos asks it rhetorically as part of a list of ordinary observations, and the observation is simply that people who are going the same way end up alongside each other.

You are not being measured against a standard of agreement, and a question asked in Amos has never once been a test a marriage could fail. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a proverb from becoming a weapon in a kitchen, and Amos 3:3 is an observation about roads and not a requirement placed on households.

The sixth conversation has never finished

Something practical, and it is about the shape of those six conversations rather than their content.

In each of them, a case was begun and not completed. Somewhere around the second minute the other person started assembling their reply, and from that point on nobody was listening, and both people ended the conversation still holding the argument they never got to finish.

Six unfinished cases is why it restarts. An unfinished case has to be made again. That is the whole mechanism.

You have been in a conversation that has never once reached its end, and six half heard cases have never once added up to one heard one. The written word asks whether two can walk together and takes for granted that they talk on the way, and the Spirit of God is the one who can hold a room still long enough for somebody to finish.

So here is the method, and it is dull and mechanical and it works, and it takes ten minutes.

Set a timer. Five minutes each. He goes first, because he has been trying to say this for a week and being answered at the second minute.

For his five minutes, no interruption. None. Not clarification, not a correction of a fact, not a small noise of disagreement. He gets to arrive at the end of his own case for the first time since this started.

Then five minutes the other way, and he gives you the same.

You are giving a man five uninterrupted minutes tonight and taking five in return, and a case that was allowed to finish has never once needed making a seventh time. The Holy Spirit is the one in the kitchen while a timer runs, and Amos 3:3 puts two people on the same road together.

And here is the part people do not expect. Very often, a case that gets finished collapses on its own. Not because it was wrong, but because saying the whole of a thing out loud to somebody who is actually listening is the first time the person saying it hears it too.

Then decide. Ten minutes of listening buys a decision that six conversations could not.

You have a way through this that costs ten minutes and a timer, and a marriage that can sit down for ten minutes has never once been a marriage in trouble over an appliance. The Holy Spirit is the one at the table with two people who are facing the same way, and Amos 3:3 puts the agreement in the walking.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over two people who have had the same conversation six times.

You are two people who want the same thing by different routes and not two people at odds, and a disagreement about a machine has never once been a crack in a marriage. I am not telling you which of you is right and I am not telling you how it turns out. Amos 3:3 asks about walking together rather than thinking alike, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who shows two people they are facing the same way.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You are agreed on the road already, and a household that wants the same destination has never once been divided by an argument about how to get there. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a question in Amos from becoming a test, and the written word made the agreement about the walking, so the opinions were never what was being measured.

Ten minutes. Five each. He goes first.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Sixth conversation in this kitchen, you were never once a crack in this marriage and you do not get a seventh. Amos 3:3 asks can two walk together, so by the Holy Spirit I set a timer tonight and I let him finish, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear about who carries it if this goes badly, you have no authority to keep two people from talking. The written word makes the agreement about the road rather than about the opinions, and by the Holy Spirit I say the real thing out loud in my five minutes.
  3. Father, You put two people on one road and You asked about the walking and not about the thinking. Your word says can two walk together, so by Your Spirit we sit down at this table tonight and we decide before either of us gets up.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
