Repair Or ReplaceProverbs 11:14

Everyone Has Told Me Something Different

This message is for the woman given four confident and contradictory answers by four people who all care about her, and who now has less clarity than she started with

Four people. Four answers. All of them certain.

Your brother in law, who was very clear and slightly impatient about how clear he was. The woman at work, who has had the same situation and knows exactly what she would do. Your mother, who said one sentence that was not really about machines at all. And the man on the phone, who was kind and knew the most and was also, it turned out, the least willing to say anything definite.

And the extraordinary thing, the thing worth stopping on, is that you now know less than you did before you started.

Not less information. More information. Less clarity.

Because before the asking there was a decision with two sides to it, which is uncomfortable but manageable. After the asking there is a decision with two sides to it and four people watching, and three of those four will now be slightly wrong whichever way it goes, and at least one of them will say something about it later.

That is what the asking actually bought.

You are a woman with four opinions and one decision and not a woman who is confused, and a room full of different answers has never once meant the answer was unavailable to you.

Everyone Has Told Me Something Different

In the multitude of counselors there is safety

There is a proverb that gets quoted at people exactly when it makes their life harder, and it is worth reading what it actually claims.

Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety. (Proverbs 11:14, King James Version)

In the multitude of counselors there is safety. Safety. Not clarity. Not consensus. Not the right answer arriving fully formed once enough people have weighed in.

Safety is a specific claim and it is a modest one. It means the chance of walking into something disastrous without noticing goes down when several people have looked at it. That is all it claims, and it is true, and it has already happened.

You have already had the benefit this proverb describes, and four people looking at a thing has never once been required to produce four people agreeing. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who now has more answers than she started with, and Proverbs 11:14 promises safety rather than agreement.

Because look at what the four of them did, taken together.

None of them said the thing that would have been genuinely alarming. Nobody said that this is a catastrophe. Nobody said that either option would sink the household. Four people looked at a situation and none of them raised an alarm, and that is precisely the safety the proverb means.

You were checked by four people and cleared by all four of them, and a disagreement about the best way has never once been the same as a warning about danger. The written word sets the multitude of counselors against the people falling, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a woman hear the silence where an alarm would have been.

And notice what the proverb does not do. It does not hand the decision to the counselors. The people in the verse still walk the road. The counsel is a service to the walking, not a replacement for it.

You are still the one who decides and that was always the arrangement, and advice received from four people has never once transferred the choice to any of them. The Holy Spirit is the one who hands a decision back to the woman holding it, and Proverbs 11:14 makes counsel a safeguard for the one deciding rather than a substitute for her.

Asking is finished

Something practical, and it is a single instruction rather than a technique.

The asking is over. Not because the four were unhelpful, but because the thing asking was supposed to do has been done, and every further ask from here adds an opinion without adding safety.

There is a point where consultation stops being consultation and becomes a search for permission, and that point was somewhere around the third person.

You have not been gathering information since the second conversation, and looking for one more voice has never once been the same as needing one. The written word describes counsel as protection rather than as authorization, and the Spirit of God is the one who can tell those two apart in a woman standing in a kitchen with a phone in her hand.

And here is the question that ends it, and it is uncomfortable and it works.

Which answer did you want before you asked anybody?

There is one. There always is. It was there on the first evening, before the brother in law, before the woman at work. It has been quietly present through all four conversations, and every conversation has been measured against it without anybody saying so.

That is not stubbornness and it is not pride. That is a person who lives in the house, knows the machine, knows the month, and formed a view. Four other people have now confirmed that the view is not dangerous. The proverb has done its work.

You were already holding a view before the first conversation, and an instinct formed by the person who lives in the house has never once been the least informed opinion in the room. The Holy Spirit is the one who returns a woman to what she already thought, and Proverbs 11:14 protects the one walking rather than overruling her.

Then tell one person. Not to ask them. To say it.

You have a sentence to make rather than a question to float, and a decision said out loud to one person has never once been a decision still open at eleven at night. The Holy Spirit is the one in the room when it stops being a question, and Proverbs 11:14 leaves the walking with the one who walks.

The sentence is: I have decided, we are doing this one. Not I think, not probably, not what do you reckon. Said flat, once, to one person, so that the decision exists outside your own head where it cannot be quietly reopened at eleven at night.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman with four answers and a fifth name on her screen.

You are a woman with four opinions and one decision and not a woman who is confused, and a room full of different answers has never once meant the answer was unavailable to you. I am not telling you which one to choose and I am not telling you how it turns out. Proverbs 11:14 promises safety in the multitude of counselors and never once promises agreement, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who hands the decision back to you.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You have already been made safe by the asking, and four people who disagree about the best way have never once been four people warning you off. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a woman hear where the alarm was not, and the written word left the walking to the walker on purpose, so the choice was never transferred to anybody.

Asking is finished. Now say it out loud to one person.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Fifth phone call I have not made, you were never once required and you would have added nothing. Proverbs 11:14 says in the multitude of counselors there is safety, so by the Holy Spirit I put the phone down and I say it out loud tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Search for somebody to agree with me, you have no standing in this kitchen and you never once brought clarity into it. The written word promises safety rather than consensus and leaves the walking to the walker, and by the Holy Spirit I stop collecting witnesses.
  3. Father, You gave counsel as a safeguard and You never once took the choosing away from the one who walks. Your word says in the multitude of counselors there is safety, so by Your Spirit I decide tonight and I tell one person plainly.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
