They Brought It Round In A Truck

This message is for the woman who received somebody's old machine and cannot separate her gratitude from her humiliation

They were delighted.

That is the detail that has been hardest to hold onto, and it is the detail this whole article turns on.

When they came round with it in the back of the truck, they were in a very good mood. They made a thing of reversing up the drive. Somebody said something about the step. There was a whole business with the doorframe and a lot of instructions being shouted by people who had no idea what they were doing.

It was, by any ordinary measure, a good afternoon.

And you have been unable to enjoy it since, because underneath the whole thing there has been a second track running, and the second track says: they know.

They know how things are. Somebody must have said something. This machine came here because somebody worked out that you could not get one, and the whole cheerful afternoon was a kindness arranged around that fact.

So the gratitude is real, and it is genuinely felt, and it is sitting inside something that feels like being seen through.

You are a woman who received something and not a woman who was pitied, and a machine carried into a house by friends has never once been a charity case arriving.

They Brought It Round In A Truck

It is more blessed to give than to receive

There is a sentence of Jesus that Paul quotes, and it has been turned into something it does not say.

I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. (Acts 20:35, King James Version)

It is more blessed to give than to receive.

That sentence gets used as a rule against receiving, as though the receiver were in the inferior position and ought to feel it. And that reading does not survive one minute of looking at the verse.

It is a statement about the giver's blessing. It says that the person who gives gets the larger share of the good. Which means that on the afternoon that truck backed up your drive, the people with the larger share of the blessing were the ones in the truck.

You are the occasion for somebody else's larger share and not the person in the lesser position, and a woman who received something has never once been the one who came off worse in that verse. The Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody who has not been able to enjoy a good afternoon, and Acts 20:35 assigns the greater blessing to the giver.

And notice the context, because it is the opposite of charity as people imagine it.

Paul is talking about working with his own hands in order to support the weak. He is describing ordinary people doing ordinary work and then using it to hold somebody else up, and he presents it as the normal shape of a life rather than as an emergency response.

You are inside the ordinary arrangement the passage describes and not an exception to it, and one household holding another one up has never once been a departure from how this is supposed to work. The written word makes supporting the weak a standing practice rather than a rescue, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes the emergency out of an ordinary kindness.

And there is one more thing worth having, which is who said it.

It is a saying of Jesus that is not in any of the four gospels. Paul is preserving a line that was remembered and passed around because it was worth keeping, and the line he thought worth preserving is one that puts the giver in the good position.

You were not being given something out of pity, and a line Jesus said about giving has never once implied that the person receiving is in disgrace. The Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman read an afternoon correctly, and Acts 20:35 preserves the saying for the sake of the givers.

What their faces were actually doing

Something practical, and it is about evidence.

Go back to the afternoon and look at what people were actually doing, rather than at the conclusion that got drawn about what they were thinking.

They were laughing. They were arguing about the doorframe. Somebody made a joke about somebody else's back. Nobody was being careful with you, and careful is what people are when they are handling a situation.

Pity has a specific look and it is unmistakable and it was not in that driveway.

You have been reading a meaning into an afternoon that the afternoon did not contain, and a group of people enjoying themselves in a driveway has never once been a group of people managing somebody. The written word puts the blessing on the givers, and the Spirit of God is the one who returns a woman to what actually happened.

Now the second practical thing, and it is about what to do with the thank you.

Say it plainly. Once. Thank you for bringing that round, it is working, it has done everything.

And then do not explain the situation. That is the discipline and it is harder than the thank you.

Because the explanation is the thing that would actually turn this into charity. I would never have been able to, things have been tight since, I did not like to ask. Every one of those sentences hands them a role they never asked for and makes a transaction out of an afternoon.

You are able to thank somebody without handing them your accounts, and a plain thank you has never once needed a situation attached to it to be sincere. The Holy Spirit is the one present when a short sentence gets said, and Acts 20:35 speaks about the giver's blessing and requires no accounting from anybody.

You have a machine in that kitchen that does everything this household needs, and a thing received from friends has never once worked less well than a thing bought alone. The Holy Spirit is the one present while it runs, and Acts 20:35 puts the blessing on the giver and requires nothing back.

And then, at some point, give something. Not back to them, and not in return, which would be settling a debt that does not exist. To somebody else, whenever it comes up, because that is what the passage describes and it is a circulation rather than a ledger.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman standing in front of a machine somebody gave her.

You are a woman who received something and not a woman who was pitied, and a machine carried into a house by friends has never once been a charity case arriving. I am not telling you how long it lasts and I am not telling you what comes next. Acts 20:35 puts the greater blessing on the giver, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who lets an afternoon be read correctly.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You have been the occasion for somebody else's good afternoon, and a household on the receiving end of a kindness has never once been the household that lost something in the exchange. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the emergency out of ordinary generosity, and the written word made supporting each other the standing practice, so nothing unusual happened in your driveway at all.

Thank them plainly. And explain nothing.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Second track running under that afternoon, you were never once true and you have no evidence. Acts 20:35 says it is more blessed to give than to receive, so by the Holy Spirit I say thank you plainly tonight and explain nothing, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Sentence I invented and have been living under, you have no place here and nobody ever said you. The written word puts the greater blessing on the people who gave it, and by the Holy Spirit I stop reading pity into a driveway full of laughing.
  3. Father, You preserved a saying that puts the giver in the good position. Your word says it is more blessed to give than to receive, so by Your Spirit I let the gratitude stay plain and unpaid for, and I run a load tonight.
