The Cheapest One And Still A Card

This message is for the man who bought the cheapest and still had to borrow for it, carrying two separate shames about one machine

Two things happened and they got welded together.

The first: the cheapest one was chosen, because that is what the month allowed.

The second: even that had to go on a card.

And somewhere between the till and the car, those two facts stopped being two facts and became one feeling, and the feeling has a sentence in it, and the sentence is something like: I could not even manage the cheap one.

That is the thing that has been carried since Tuesday. Not the machine. Not really the money either, because the payment is small and it is manageable and you have run the numbers twice and they work.

It is the doubling. One failure would have been survivable. Two on the same machine feels like a report.

So let us separate them, because welded things are always heavier than the two things they were made of.

You are a man who got his household a working machine and not a man who failed twice, and borrowing for something a house needs has never once been a second verdict on top of the first.

The Cheapest One And Still A Card

This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him

There is a line in the psalms that names a man's condition and then does not comment on it, and the not commenting is the mercy.

This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. (Psalm 34:6, King James Version)

This poor man cried.

Notice the flatness of it. The psalm says poor the way a person says tall. It is a description of a circumstance, offered without embarrassment, without a preamble, and without any suggestion that the condition needs explaining before the story can proceed.

You are being described rather than assessed, and a man short of money has never once had to account for it before Scripture would take him seriously. The Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody sitting at a table with a payment written on a scrap, and Psalm 34:6 names the condition and moves straight on to the crying.

And then: and the LORD heard him.

There is no gap in that sentence. No interval in which the man improves his position first. The crying and the hearing sit next to each other with a comma between them, and the poverty is still the man's condition while the hearing happens.

You are heard in the condition you are actually in and not in a better one, and a man who cried out while still short has never once been asked to wait until he was not. The written word puts the hearing immediately after the crying, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present at a kitchen table on a Tuesday night.

And saved him out of all his troubles, which is the last clause and worth reading carefully.

Out of all his troubles. Plural. Not one trouble sorted and the others left standing. The verse takes a man with a stack of them and speaks about the stack.

You have more than one thing on you and the verse counted all of them, and a man carrying two things at once has never once been outside what that sentence covers. The Holy Spirit is the one who deals with a man rather than with one item at a time, and Psalm 34:6 says all his troubles in the plural.

Separating the two things

Something practical, and it is the actual work of this article. There are two facts and they need pulling apart, and the pulling apart is done on paper because paper does not weld.

Fact one: the machine cost what it cost, and that was what the month allowed. That is arithmetic about a month.

Fact two: the payment is spread over some number of weeks. That is a different piece of arithmetic about the same month, and it has an end date, and the end date can be written down.

Neither of those facts says anything about a man. They are both facts about a month, and a month is a short thing.

You have two pieces of arithmetic and no verdict anywhere in either of them, and a month that was tight has never once been a description of the man living through it. The written word names a condition flatly and then gets on with the story, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates a circumstance from a person at a kitchen table.

Now the practical instruction, and it is in two parts and the second part is the hard one.

Write the payment down on paper. The amount, the number of weeks, and the date it finishes. Actually write it, on actual paper, in pen.

A payment that lives only in a head is infinite. It has no end and no size, it turns up at eleven at night, and it feels like a permanent condition. A payment with an end date written on it is a task with a finish line.

You are able to give this thing an ending tonight with a pen, and a number with a finish date on it has never once been the same weight as one carried loose. The Holy Spirit is the one at the table while the date gets written, and Psalm 34:6 speaks about a man being brought out of all of them.

And then tell your wife the number.

You have a machine in that kitchen washing everything this household wears, and a working thing bought in a hard month has never once been a lesser thing than one bought in an easy one. The Holy Spirit is the one present in that kitchen while it runs, and Psalm 34:6 hears a man in the condition he is actually in.

She probably knows there is one. What she does not have is the size and the end date, and what is actually happening at the moment is that a man is carrying a finite thing alone as though it were infinite, in a house with another adult in it.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man sitting at a table with a balance on a screen tonight.

You are a man who got his household a working machine and not a man who failed twice, and borrowing for something a house needs has never once been a second verdict on top of the first. I am not telling you the money gets easier and I am not telling you when. Psalm 34:6 names a man's condition flatly and has him heard in it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is present at that table.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You have been heard already and not once been asked to improve your position first, and a man who cried out while still short has never once been told to come back when things were better. The Spirit of God is the one who deals with the whole stack rather than one item, and the written word said all his troubles, which means the doubling was inside the sentence from the start.

Paper. A date. Then tell her.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Two things welded into one feeling, you were never once a single verdict and you come apart tonight. Psalm 34:6 says this poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, so by the Holy Spirit I write the borrowing down with a finish date on it, and I carry one shame instead of two, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Sentence about not managing, you have no standing in this kitchen and no arithmetic behind you. The written word names a man's condition flatly and gets straight on with the story, and by the Holy Spirit I tell her the number tonight.
  3. Father, You heard a man while he was still short and You never once made him wait for a better month. Your word says and saved him out of all his troubles, so by Your Spirit I take the whole stack to the table, and I put the kettle on.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
