Six weeks.
And the shape of a week has completely changed, and it happened without anybody deciding it.
There is a store run every day now. Not a big one. Milk, something for tonight, bread, and back. And the cool box on the floor by the back door with the frozen blocks in it that get swapped in the morning and again at about six.
And a whole set of small rules has grown up that nobody wrote down. Nothing gets bought on offer. Nothing gets cooked in a quantity that produces a second meal. Nothing stays.
And before anything else, it should be said that this is genuinely hard, and specifically that it is hard in a way nobody can see.
It is not dramatic. It is an extra forty minutes a day, every day, for six weeks, spent on a task that used to take one afternoon a week. That is a real cost and it has been paid quietly out of an ordinary life.
You are running a household one day at a time and not running one badly, and a week rebuilt around a cool box has never once been a week that stopped working.

Give us this day our daily bread
There is a line in a prayer that everybody can say from memory, and almost nobody notices what kind of arrangement it describes.
Give us this day our daily bread. (Matthew 6:11, King James Version)
This day. Daily. Two words in one short sentence, both of them insisting on the same thing, which is that the supply being asked for is the supply for today.
Not a store. Not a month. Not a full cupboard with reserve in it. Today's bread, asked for today, in a prayer given to everybody as the ordinary pattern.
You are living inside the arrangement the prayer actually describes, and a household that gets what today needs has never once been a household short of what it was given. Matthew 6:11 asks for the day rather than for the store, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody swapping blocks in a cool box at six in the morning.
Now, that is not a sentence that makes the forty minutes shorter, and I am not going to pretend it is.
But it does something to what the forty minutes mean. Because a daily supply has been treated, for six weeks, as evidence of a household in trouble. And the prayer treats a daily supply as the normal shape of a life held by God.
You are inside a pattern Jesus handed to everybody, and shopping for one day at a time has never once been a sign that a household had slipped. The written word makes daily the standard rather than the emergency, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes the alarm out of an ordinary word.
And there is something else in that line worth having on a Tuesday morning.
Give us. Not give me. It is plural, and it is asked by people together, and it assumes a household or a table rather than a person coping in isolation.
You are inside a plural prayer and not a solitary one, and a daily arrangement has never once been something a woman was meant to carry on her own. Matthew 6:11 says give us, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts other hands on a cool box.
The rules nobody wrote down
Something practical, and it is about the invisible system that has been built.
In six weeks an entire food operation has been designed, from nothing, without a plan, on the fly. There is a rotation for the blocks. There is an understanding about what gets bought Monday against Thursday. There is a whole category of food that has quietly been dropped.
That is a real piece of work and it has never once been acknowledged, including by you.
You have built something in six weeks that nobody taught you, and a system assembled on the fly has never once been the same thing as a household improvising badly. The written word describes a daily supply as an ordinary form of provision, and the Spirit of God is the one who notices work that nobody in the house has named.
Now the practical instruction, and it is a subtraction rather than an addition.
Buy only what today needs. Actually only. Not today plus a little in case, which is what has been creeping in, and which is the thing making the store run take longer and the cool box fuller and the whole system heavier.
The in case is where the strain lives. It is the attempt to run a fridge without a fridge, and it costs money and time and space and it does not work.
You are allowed to stop trying to keep a reserve, and a cool box asked to do a fridge's job has never once been a failing cool box. Matthew 6:11 asks for the day and no further, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman stop provisioning for a tomorrow that has its own store run in it.
And the second subtraction: stop planning past the evening. Tonight's meal. That is the whole horizon while this lasts. Tomorrow has a morning in it and a store in it and it will be dealt with then.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman swapping blocks in a cool box this morning.
You are running a household one day at a time and not running one badly, and a week rebuilt around a cool box has never once been a week that stopped working. I am not telling you when the machine comes and I am not telling you what it costs. Matthew 6:11 asks for this day and for the daily bread and stops there, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is present at that counter.
And this, which is the word I actually came with:
You have been given a prayer that ends at today on purpose, and a supply that arrives one day at a time has never once been a lesser supply than a full cupboard. The Spirit of God is the one who provisions the day rather than the quarter, and the written word said give us, which means the carrying was never meant to sit on one person.
Today's food. Nothing for tomorrow. Tomorrow has a morning in it.
Declare this over yourself
- Arithmetic about milk running in my head all day, you were never once part of the job and you do not get to continue. Matthew 6:11 says give us this day our daily bread, so by the Holy Spirit I buy for today and for nothing past it, in the name of Jesus.
- Reserve I keep trying to build in a cool box, you have no place here and you were never asked for. The written word ends the asking at the day and never once reaches for the week, and by the Holy Spirit I leave the extra thing on the shelf.
- Father, You taught the whole world to ask for a single day at a time, and You said give us and not give me. Your word says our daily bread, so by Your Spirit I close the horizon at tonight, and I make the dinner.
