Nobody Has Asked How It Gets Done

Five people live here.

Everybody has clean clothes. Everybody has had clean clothes every day for three weeks. Nothing has been late and nobody has run out of anything, and the house has continued exactly as it did before the machine stopped.

And not one person has asked how.

That is the sentence. Not a complaint, not yet. A fact with a strange shape to it: a whole household is being carried through a genuine difficulty and the household does not know it is being carried.

And the reason it has that shape is that you have been good at it. The work has been done at times when nobody is around. The evidence has been cleared away. Everything appears in the drawers the way it always did, and appearing in the drawers is what makes it invisible.

So the thing that is actually hurting is not the work.

It is that the work has been done so well that it has disappeared, and the disappearing has started to feel like being disappeared along with it.

You are a woman doing invisible work and not a woman who wants praise for it, and a job that nobody has asked about has never once been a job that nobody valued.

Martha came to him

There is a famous scene about two sisters, and almost everybody reads it as a rebuke, and the detail worth having is what Martha actually did.

But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? (Luke 10:40, King James Version)

She came to him and said it.

That is the part to notice before anything else. She did not carry it silently. She did not perform serenity while resenting it. She walked into the room and named the thing out loud to the person she trusted most.

You are permitted to walk in and say it, and a woman naming what she has been carrying has never once been doing something Scripture treats as unthinkable. Luke 10:40 has Martha coming and speaking rather than seething in a kitchen, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody folding at eleven at night.

Now what he says back to her is famous and it is gentler than people make it.

He does not say she was wrong to serve. He does not tell her the work did not matter. He says she is careful and troubled about many things, which is a description rather than an accusation, and it is said by somebody looking directly at her.

You are being looked at directly and described accurately, and a woman carrying a household has never once been unseen by the one Martha came to. The written word has him naming her condition rather than dismissing her work, and the Spirit of God is the one who sees the whole of what a house is costing somebody.

And there is a word in Martha's own sentence that is the heart of this row.

To serve alone. That is what she says. Not that the serving is too much. That the serving is alone.

Which is exactly the thing in this house. The washing is not the problem. The washing alone is the problem, and specifically the washing alone while nobody knows it is happening.

You are carrying the aloneness on top of the work, and a job done in an empty kitchen has never once weighed the same as the same job done in company. Luke 10:40 puts the word alone in Martha's own mouth, and the Holy Spirit is the one who hears which half is the heavy half.

Saying it is not asking for praise

Something practical, and it is about a fear that has kept this quiet for three weeks.

The fear is that saying anything would be fishing. That to mention the work is to ask to be thanked for it, and that a woman who has to ask has not really been thanked at all.

That fear is doing enormous work and it is built on a mistake.

There is a difference between asking for praise and supplying information. Nobody in this house is withholding gratitude. They are missing a fact. They genuinely do not know, because the whole system has been designed by you to be invisible and it has worked perfectly.

You have been withholding information rather than waiting for thanks, and a household that does not know what is happening has never once been a household refusing to care. The written word has Martha stating the situation plainly and being answered, and the Spirit of God is the one who can tell the difference between a plea and a report.

Now the practical instruction, and the time and place matter more than the words.

Say it at the table. While everybody is sitting down, with food in front of them, in an ordinary voice, in one sentence.

Not in the kitchen while working, which frames it as a complaint made mid job. Not at the end of the evening when everybody is tired. At the table, where a sentence gets heard by five people at once and nobody has to repeat it.

You are able to say one plain sentence in front of everybody tonight, and a fact stated at a dinner table has never once been the same thing as a woman asking to be thanked. Luke 10:40 has Martha speaking directly and being answered directly, and the Holy Spirit is the one at the table while it gets said.

And the sentence is simple. Everything in your drawers this week was washed by hand in the bathroom. That is it. No accusation, no list of hours, no and nobody has noticed, which turns it into the thing you were afraid of.
