One Room That Works Properly

You worked out in about April that the whole house is not happening.

Not with the money, not with the time, not this year. And that was not a collapse. It was a piece of accurate arithmetic done at a kitchen table, and the arithmetic was right.

And what came out of it was a smaller idea, which was: one room. The machine in the kitchen stays broken and the window stays taped, and one room gets to be right.

One room that works. Where everything in it does what it is supposed to do and nothing in it needs an explanation. Somewhere to sit down at nine o'clock in a room that is not a list.

And it has been five months and you have not started.

And the reason is a thing that has not been said out loud, and it goes roughly: one room is a bit sad. Wanting one room is what a person wants when they have given up on the house, and admitting that out loud would make the giving up official.

You are a woman making one thing right and not a woman who has lowered her sights, and one corner of a house done properly has never once been a smaller ambition than the whole of it.

Quiet resting places

There is a promise in Isaiah about where people will live, and the plural in it is the part to notice.

And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places. (Isaiah 32:18, King James Version)

Quiet resting places.

Places. Plural. Not one great peaceable estate, but resting places, which are locations inside a life where a person can stop, and there are several of them, and they are described in the plural on purpose.

That is a picture of peace distributed in small locations rather than achieved all at once across everything.

You are being promised places rather than a whole property, and a peace located in small spots has never once been a lesser peace than one spread evenly. Isaiah 32:18 makes the resting places plural, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with a woman who has not started on a room for five months.

And notice the word resting.

A resting place is not a finished place. It is a place where somebody stops. The word is about function rather than about condition, and it describes what happens in a spot rather than what the spot looks like.

You are making a place where somebody stops and not a place that has to be finished, and a corner that does its job has never once needed the rest of a house to be doing its job too. The written word names the function rather than the standard, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a corner into a resting place.

And peaceable habitation comes first in that verse, and habitation is an ordinary word about where people actually live.

It is not a word about grandeur. It is the word for the place a person is, and the promise attaches peace to that rather than to any improvement of it.

You are living in a habitation that the promise is attached to, and a house that needs work has never once been outside the kind of dwelling that verse is about. Isaiah 32:18 attaches the peace to where people dwell, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in the house as it actually stands.

Smaller is not lower

Something practical, and it is about the thing that has not been said out loud.

One room is not a reduced version of the whole house. It is a different kind of project entirely, and it is the only kind that finishes.

A whole house, in a year like this one, does not finish. It gets started, and then something costs more than expected, and then it stops in the middle, and a house half done is worse to live in than a house not started.

One room finishes in a weekend. And a finished thing is a different object from an unfinished thing, whatever their sizes.

You are able to finish something this weekend, and one completed corner has never once been worth less than a whole house that stayed a plan. The written word promises resting places in the plural rather than one large achievement, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a small finished thing a real thing.

Now here is the second part, and it is about the size of the target rather than the size of the ambition.

Make it smaller still. Not a room. A corner.

A chair, a lamp, a small table, and whatever goes on it. That is the whole project, it costs almost nothing, and it takes about two hours on a Saturday.

And when it is done there is a place in this house where a person can sit down at nine o'clock in a spot that is not a list.

You are two hours away from a place to sit down in this house, and a corner made right on a Saturday has never once been too small a thing to change an evening. Isaiah 32:18 describes resting places rather than restored estates, and the Holy Spirit is the one present in a chair in a corner at nine at night.

And do not apologize for it. That is the second half. When somebody notices, and somebody will, do not say I know it is only a corner. Say: yes, I did that. And then let them sit in it.
