It Lasted YearsJoshua 4:7

It Came Over On The Boat With Us

This message is for the man parting with a machine that crossed an ocean with his family, and letting go of a marker of where they came from

It came in a crate.

That is the sentence the children have never heard, and it is the reason this is harder than it should be.

It came in a crate, on a ship, with four other things, because it was newer than the one being left behind and because your father said a machine is a machine and it costs less to move it than to buy another one on the far side.

And it was wrong for the electricity here and there was a whole business about that in the first month, and somebody came and did something to it, and it ran for twenty two years afterward.

And it is being taken away on Saturday, and that is entirely correct, because it is finished.

And nobody in this house knows any of that except you.

Not because it was kept back. Because it never came up. There was no evening on which somebody said let me tell you about the crate, and now there is a machine going on Saturday and a story that has never been told, and those two things have arrived at the same time.

You are letting an object go and not letting a history go, and a marker that leaves a house has never once taken with it the thing it was marking.

It Came Over On The Boat With Us

What mean ye by these stones

There is a moment in Joshua where stones are set up on purpose, and the reason given is entirely about a future conversation.

That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones? (Joshua 4:7, King James Version)

When your children ask their fathers.

The stones exist for that question. Not as a monument to be looked at, not as a thing to be respected in silence. They exist so that a child will point at them and ask, and a father will then have to answer.

The marker is a prompt for a conversation, and the conversation is the actual object.

You are holding the conversation rather than the marker, and a pile of stones has never once been the thing that was meant to last in that passage. The Holy Spirit is the one present with a man in a kitchen on a Friday night, and Joshua 4:7 puts the whole purpose in the asking and the answering.

And notice what that means about the stones themselves.

They are river stones. Twelve of them, pulled out of a riverbed, chosen for being carryable rather than for being beautiful. There is nothing about them that is remarkable, and there was never any claim that they were.

Their entire value is that they make a child ask a question.

You have an ordinary object that was only ever a prompt, and a thing that exists to start a conversation has never once needed to be kept in order to do its job. The written word chooses river stones rather than anything valuable, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a marker in its proper place.

And there is something quietly urgent in the phrase in time to come.

The stones are set up for a generation that is not there yet. The whole arrangement is built forward, for people who were not on that riverbank and who will need to be told.

You are the one who was there and they are the ones who were not, and a story held by the only person who remembers it has never once been a story that was safe. The Holy Spirit is the one who moves a man to tell something before the prompt disappears, and Joshua 4:7 builds the whole thing for the generation that comes after.

Tell the whole route

Something practical, and it is about the detail rather than the summary.

The summary version is: that machine came from the old country. Six words, and everybody nods, and nothing is transferred.

The whole route is different and it is what they will actually keep.

It came in a crate. It was on a ship for however many days. It was wrong for the electricity and a man came and did something to it in the first month and your father stood over him the whole time and did not trust him. And then it ran for twenty two years.

You have a whole route rather than a summary, and a story told with the crate and the electricity in it has never once been the same story as the six word version. The written word has fathers answering a real question with a real account, and the Spirit of God is the one who loosens the details in a man who has never told them.

Now the second practical thing, and it is about the timing.

Tell it before Saturday. Not after.

Because while the machine is still in the room, the story has something to point at, and a story with an object in the room is a completely different thing from a story about a thing that used to be there.

Point at it while you talk. That is the whole method and it is the method the stones were for.

You have an object in the room for two more days and a story that wants it, and a thing pointed at while it is still there has never once been the same as a thing described from memory. The Holy Spirit is the one in the kitchen while a man tells it, and Joshua 4:7 sets up stones precisely so that there is something to point at.

And then let it go on Saturday, because the machine was never the thing. It was the prompt, and the prompt has now done exactly what a prompt is for.

You have a machine in that corner that has one job left in it, and an old appliance waiting for a truck has never once been useless while it can still make somebody ask a question. The Holy Spirit is the one in the kitchen while it gets pointed at, and Joshua 4:7 builds the whole arrangement around the asking.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man in a kitchen the night before a machine goes.

You are letting an object go and not letting a history go, and a marker that leaves a house has never once taken with it the thing it was marking. I am not telling you Saturday is easy and I am not telling you what the new one costs. Joshua 4:7 puts the whole purpose in the telling, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is at that table.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You have the conversation in your hands and it was always the real object, and a story moved from one head into three has never once been a story that could be taken away on a truck. The Spirit of God is the one who loosens the details in a man who has never told them, and the written word chose river stones because ordinary things make children ask, so the machine was only ever the prompt.

Tonight. The whole route. Point at it while you talk.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Machine going on Saturday, you were never once the history and you were only ever the marker. Joshua 4:7 says when your children ask their fathers in time to come, so by the Holy Spirit I tell them the whole route tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Story nobody has ever asked me for, you have been sitting in one head too long. The written word builds the whole arrangement so that a child asks and a father answers, and by the Holy Spirit I say it out loud with the thing still in the room.
  3. Father, You chose river stones because ordinary things make children ask questions. Your word says what mean ye by these stones, so by Your Spirit I point at it while I talk tonight, and then I let it go.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
